Re: Danube Swabian folk stories and remedies?

Hi Megan,

My Oma's family was from Ruskodorf in the Banat and I am aware of a few folk remedies that they used.

  • Butterlappe (literally butter cloth) was a cloth smeared with cold butter that would be put on the chest while sleeping to relieve chest congestion - kind of an old-fashioned Vicks VapoRub. My Oma did use this treatment on me many times when I was a kid. The butter would melt overnight and absorb into your skin. I'm not sure if it really worked, but she swore by it.
  • Ear candling was a practice used to draw wax out of your ears. You take a strip of linen cloth dipped in wax and roll it around a wooden spoon to form a cone/tube. You then stick the narrow end of the tube into the ear and light the other end on fire, which draws wax out of the ear. I was too afraid to try this as a kid, but my sister had this done to her multiple times.
  • Speck in die Nase (literally bacon in the nose) was a treatment for a bloody nose. As it sounds, a piece of (presumably raw) bacon would be put in the nose to clot the blood. I've never tried this, but my Oma's cousin had mentioned this.
Hope this helps!
-Mark
