Mathias Vareng was born in Niedersaubach, near the town of Lebach in the Landkreis (county) of Saarlouis, in the Saarland.  This area went back forth between French and German rule.  St. Hubert, Charleville & Soltur were primarily settled by French families from the province of Lorraine.  This town is in that general area.

Between 1700 and 1766, the region was pretty much controlled by Austria despite the fact the last Duke was father in law of the king of France at the time. Most emigrants to the Banat were at the invitation of the Empress of Austria - Maria Theresa after the Ottoman Turks were driven out, starting 1718.   The large scale emigration ended around 1793 when Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were disposed and later executed.

The north portion was mostly German.
