Dear List Members,
the next village in Banat, whose Roman Catholic cemetery and church I will introduce to you, is Knees (Hungarian: Temeskenéz, Romanian: Satchinez, Serbian: Knez).
Knees is a typical Banat village where four ethnic groups have lived together for centuries: Romanians, Germans, Hungarians and Serbs. The first group of Germans arrived in 1786, the local Catholic church was consecrated in 1823. Until then the local Catholics belonged to the nearby parish of Billed. The Catholics have a separate cemetery here, where my photos were taken. There are now only 8-10 German families in the village; in 1900 they were about 1300.
According to some historical sources, Paul Kinizsi, one of the most famous military leaders of medieval Hungary, was born here in 1432. He was Count of Timis County and is famous for being the only Eastern European general who never lost a single battle against the Turks.
Another interesting fact: the Knees marshes near the village are the largest ornithological reserve in the Banat. It was declared a protected area because of its heterogeneous bird population, and so far more than 150 bird species have been observed here. The bird on its coat of arms is a reference to this.
The Knees cemetery and church general view photos can be downloaded for free from this link until 25th March. There are 58 photos, the size of the folder is 265 MB.

In the "online group preview" feature, the images may appear blurry (because they are large), so I recommend either viewing them individually or downloading the whole folder to your computer. Enjoy!
David,
feel free to upload this folder to the website too!
Stay safe,
