Dear List Members,
I have just returned from the Banat, where I was researching church books in the Timisoara State Archives. I bought this wine, which is produced there, in one of the Banat vineyards (Rekasch). Since the wine is called Schwaben Wein, I thought I would share some photos of it with you, just for fun.
Rekasch Wineries is the largest producer and exporter of wines in Romania. However, viticulture has a much older tradition in the area, which dates back to the 15th century. The winery has an annual production capacity of 40 million liters.
Rekasch (Hungarian: Temesrékás, Romanian: Recaș, Serbian: Rekaš) was a typical mixed Banat settlement, where lived Germans, Hungarians, Romanians and Serbs even 50 years ago. Until 1941 the majority was of German ethnicity. The first German families arrived in 1726 and were followed by other German settlers until 1764.
If you visit Romania, be sure to try one of their wines. They produce over 40 different brands of wine.
Translation of the inscription on the label of the bottle (from Romanian):
The first Germans arrived in Banat, including the town of Rekasch, in the early 1700s, when the area became part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Germans (also known as Banatschwaben or Donauschwaben) began growing quality grapes and producing wine relatively early in the area around Rekasch, in the hilly region known as the Überland and in the valley of the Curasita stream.
Schwaben Wein Riesling is a dry, yellowish-greenish white wine with a fruity taste and a soft muskmelon-like aftertaste. It is recommended cold, especially with traditionally prepared poultry or white fish.
Have a nice day!
