Re: Search Help for Romanian Birth/Baptismal Certificates

Tina,

My name is Anne Leptich and I worked closely with your cousin, George on the Brettrager family in Neupanat (Ujpanat).  My husband's family is also from there.  We THOUGHT that the baptismal certificate was in the possession of the family and the church record was only the entry made in the register.  Starting in 1895 the civil records also had the birth information.  You will find the civil birth record on village-records.org   It will be in the Neupanat births--not the Neupanat christenings.

The reason we THOUGHT this:  My husband's uncle, Martin Leptich requested his records from Ellis Island when he was going through the naturalization process.  They sent him very bad photocopies of records from Neupanat and Vilagos that included his baptismal certificate and the marriage certificate of his parents.  Since he entered the US in 1914, we thought these to be copies of the originals they held.in his Ellis Island file.  I tried to pursue this years ago, but decided to go with the very bad photo copy after much hassle and red tape.

Hope this helps.  Perhaps others on the list have ideas or thoughts or experiences they would share with you.

Anne Leptich
